Terms of Use
Last updated April 27, 2026
1. About these terms
These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and Carolus covering your use of the Carolus app, website, browser extension, and related services (together, “Carolus”). By using Carolus you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the service.
We may update these terms from time to time. When we do we’ll post the new version here and update the “Last updated” date. Continued use after a change means you accept the new terms.
2. Who can use Carolus
You need to be at least 13 years old to use Carolus. If you’re between 13 and the age of majority in your jurisdiction, you confirm you have permission from a parent or guardian.
3. Your account
You sign in to Carolus with your email address using a magic link or one-time code. You’re responsible for keeping your email account secure. You let us know promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.
4. The content you save
Carolus lets you save links, articles, podcasts, social posts, and other content you encounter. The original content remains owned by whoever created or holds rights in it - we’re not republishing or claiming ownership.
You retain ownership of the notes, comments, custom titles, and other inputs you create inside Carolus. By saving content and using Carolus features (vault, weekly papers, sharing, exports), you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, process, transmit, summarise, and display your saved items and your inputs to you and to people you choose to share with - solely so we can provide the service.
You’re responsible for the content you save. Don’t save material that infringes intellectual property rights, contains illegal content, or violates anyone’s privacy. We may remove content that violates these terms or applicable law.
5. AI-generated content
Carolus uses AI to summarise items, build your weekly Paper, attach quotes to articles, and generate Different Perspectives on saved items. AI output can be wrong, miss nuance, or misattribute statements. Treat anything Carolus generates as a starting point, not a verified source. You’re responsible for fact-checking before relying on it for decisions.
We may use AI providers (currently Grok and ElevenLabs) to process your content. We don’t train models on your private content or sell it. See the Privacy Policy for the full list and how data flows.
6. Public papers, profiles, and following
You can choose whether your weekly Papers are public (visible on a Carolus URL using your @handle) or private (visible only to you and people you explicitly share with). You can change this anytime in Settings. Going private removes your public URL and stops new shares of public links from working - it does not delete your data.
When you follow another curator on Carolus, you’re telling us to surface their public Papers in your Following feed and (if they’ve opted in) to email you when they publish. You can unfollow at any time.
7. Subscriptions and billing
Carolus offers a free tier and a paid Pro tier. Pro features, pricing, and trial details are shown on the in-app paywall and at checkout. Subscriptions are processed by Stripe.
Pro subscriptions auto-renew until cancelled. You can cancel anytime in the Stripe customer portal linked from Settings. Cancellation stops the next renewal; it does not retroactively refund the current period unless required by law in your jurisdiction.
We may change Pro pricing or features. We’ll give you reasonable notice before any change that affects you, and you can cancel before the change takes effect.
8. Acceptable use
Don’t use Carolus to: harass, defame, or impersonate others; save or share illegal content or content that violates intellectual property rights; scrape, mass-export, or resell other users’ content; circumvent our rate limits, save caps, or paywall; reverse-engineer the service in ways prohibited by applicable law; or interfere with the security or operation of the service.
9. Termination
You can stop using Carolus and delete your account at any time from Settings. We can suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or that we reasonably believe pose a security or legal risk.
When an account is deleted, we remove your saved items, profile, and weekly Papers from active systems within a reasonable period. Some information may persist in encrypted backups for a limited window before being purged - see the Privacy Policy for retention specifics.
10. Disclaimers
Carolus is provided “as is.” We don’t guarantee the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the AI summaries, quotes, and perspectives will be accurate. To the fullest extent allowed by law, we disclaim all implied warranties including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
11. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent allowed by law, our total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to Carolus is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or (b) USD $100.
We’re not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of [JURISDICTION], without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes that aren’t resolved informally will be heard exclusively in the courts of [JURISDICTION].
